At the end of the Second World War, brothers Reimar and Horten were 2 of the most famous aircraft designers in Germany. They brought expertise in this field by creating a special division that, like the Sonderkommando 9 division, dealt with the development of tailless aircraft.
The development of the Horton Ho IX airplane, equipped with BMW 003A-1 jet engines, began in 1942. The first prototypes were built as "gliders" due to the difficulties encountered in the development of the jet engine. The 2nd prototype used the Jumo 004B-1 engine.
In 1944, the 2nd version of the plane flew for the first time, reaching a speed of 780 km/h. The production of the plane was transferred to Gothaer Waggonfabrik and the name was changed to Go229. The first plane from Gothaer Waggonfabrik, the Go 229 AO V3, received a Jumo 004-C engine.
